Child Therapy

About Child Therapy

Here at Holistic Mind and Body, we are dedicated to addressing the specific needs of each child while supporting and guiding parents through a process of positive growth. In counselling, our therapists will focus on identifying underlying issues for behavioural problems and teaching parents positive coping strategies for dealing with their children.

When Does My Child Need Therapy

It’s important to remember that children are not mini-adults, despite the high expectations society places on them today. Children’s brains are not yet fully developed, and as such, they don’t think the same way adults do. Having said that, children are now exposed to modern realities at a much younger age than ever before. And with the high pace of modern life, parents simply are not equipped to deal with what could be symptoms of anxiety or any number of other mental health issues. Often unusual behaviours are merely dismissed as ‘being a kid’.

If your child is experiencing challenges, the compassionate child therapists at Holistic Mind and Body are here for you. We are equipped to handle the emotional changes and disruptions your developing child may experience. As part of our many strategies, we will supply your child with the vocabulary they need to express their distress appropriately. If you’re concerned about your child’s mental health, don’t ignore the signs. Contact us today and let us help you.

What Does Child Therapy Entail?

Just like there is no single therapy method for adults, there are a number of different approaches to child therapy, depending on age and behaviour. Usually, a child’s therapy session is much more interactive and fun than an adult’s, given their different attention spans and comprehension levels.

At Holistic Mind and Body, two of our most popular approaches to child therapy are Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Cognitive Behaviour Play Therapy (CBPT). In essence, these approaches help children understand how their thoughts affect their actions, and how their actions have consequences. The aim is to develop new, more beneficial patterns of thought which lead to better behaviour and a stronger ability to cope with adversity.

CBT and CBPT have been proven effective in dealing with issues ranging from anxiety and depression to eating disorders and ADHD. It has also proven effective in helping children who have suffered from sexual abuse and bullying.
